"Beagle", edited from the MS by Nora Barlow (Cambridge: at the University Press) [Note: This is a reproduction of the notes that Darwin took during his voyage, and which he used as a basis for his Journal of Researches (1839, above). According to the editor, 1/3 of the manuscript was not included in the Journal, which included more than 1/3 of additional material not in the original manuscript.]

Gavin de Beer (Cambridge: at the University Press, 1958) [Consists of an extract from Darwin's Essay of 1844 where Darwin sketches out the theory of natural selection, an abstract of a letter by Darwin in October 1857 to Asa Gray at Harvard on the same topic, and the paper, "On the Tendency of Varieties to Depart Infinitely from the Original Type" written by Alfred Russel Wallace in February 1858, in which Wallace independently formulated the theory of natural selection.
